Snow trip | Les Ménuires

While I was sitting in the sun last weekend, I closed my eyes and drifted off. High in the French Alps you find the ski resort of Les Ménuires. Endless ski pistes, glorious weather (most of the time), guaranteed snow, skiing straight to your hotel and relaxing in the spa. What more could you want?

Largest in the world
The best way to start your week is with a trip to the snow. You can’t go wrong with that. From Schiphol it’s an hour and a half flight to Geneve and then a a two-hour drive to Les Ménuires. This ski resort is situated in the middle of the French Alps between Grenoble and the Italian border. Saint Martin, Val Thorens and Les Ménuires make up the largest  -no less than 375 miles-  ski area in the world: Les Trois Vallées! You will find a wide range of pistes from green to black. There is a separate ski pass for every area but there is also one for the three valleys together.

Hajo, the wintersportman
All of the four days I’m spending in Les Ménuires, the sun is shining. The reflecting sunlight from the white snow makes me so excited, I don’t want to take my skies off. Can you believe this? You are at Schiphol in the morning and you hit the pistes in the afternoon! I am accompanied by Hajo, aka de wintersport weatherman. On Facebook he keeps you informed of the latest snow sports weather. He is an expert on weather, but also on skiing. Listening carefully to his tips and tricks I go down the slopes like a real pro.

“Just follow me”, is what he shouts when he is leading the way across the rolling pistes. There is no end to the ski area. From wide pistes out in the open to narrow runs past small villages. Now and then we have the piste to ourselves and sometimes we are lucky and go down a newly prepared one. A feeling of freedom overwhelms you when you speed down the mountain listening to your skis sliding through the powder snow.

Ski in ski out
What is so special and so convenient about ski villages in France? They are very close to the pistes. I stay at 4 star spa resort Le Chalet Du Mont Vallon. The room where your keep your skis adjoins the piste, so you can leave  your hotel on skis and return on skis. Are luxury hotels your thing? Then this is the place to be. My apartment has a great view of the rising mountains.

Winter Wellness
I love Le Chalet du Mont, because there is a complete wellness centre. After a day in the snow it is time for a pamper session in the spa. Enjoy the swimming pool, the sauna and the steam-bath, your legs will be fit for the next day. And what about a massage in the beauty salon? It is devine, trust me. I loved it! And then you put on your bathrobe and have a delicious crêpe in front of the cosy fireplace in the lobby.

People love luxury but of course it comes at a price. Fortunately there is an alternative. Choose a cheaper accommodation and spend a day in the hotel spa. Shortly the hotel will open a huge, brand new wellness centre that includes a swimming pool, a meditation centre, a sauna, a Jacuzzi, and a Hammam. It will also offer beauty treatments and massages.

Fancy lunch
After a few wonderful runs down the snowy mountains it is time for lunch. Again it can be done in style, if you like. Champagne  outside on the terrace? No problem! The French know all about how to make you feel happy. What strikes me is that they serve a very good meal. Breakfast is a treat and during the day you will find exquisite restaurants on the pistes. They offer the most delicious cheese and meat platters and  very good wines. Don’t forget to order a cheese fondue. You cannot do without one when you are out and about in the mountains.
